Bridge of Esmoriz (Photo: © SIPA – IHRU)Built over the river Ovil and framed in a landscape marked by a strong rurality, the Bridge of Esmoriz would have been, once, an important route of communication, fact that would justify the investment made.

One possibility is that the Bridge would be the main route of communication between the Monastery of Ancede and the city of Porto: it made the connection between the Monastery and the place of Pala, on the right bank of the Douro, one of the busiest places for the mooring of boats.

In other words, through the Douro, the monks would not have to cover leagues of hills, winding and unsafe roads to get to Porto, using, for this purpose, the fastest means of transport and the shortest path which was the river.

Despite considered as Romanesque, the Bridge of Esmoriz would have been built in Modern times, but reproducing the construction models of Romanesque bridges.

Restoration and Enhancement
Ouvir
The Bridge of Esmoriz is one of the elements of heritage that has been part of the Route of the Romanesque since March 2010. As part of this integration, the recovery and restoration of the Bridge and its surrounding area are already planned - conservation and structural consolidation - by improving paths, implementing a storm water drainage system and placing proper street lighting.
