The current building results from the seventeenth-century reconstruction of a temple whose foundation may be earlier than 13th century. The interior includes elements of great artistic quality, among which we highlight the ceiling of the nave, dating back to 1750 and consists of coffers with carved borders framing scenes of the Virgin's life, Marian symbols and hagiographic representations. Also noteworthy is the pipe organ from 1793, built by the workshop of master Jozé Antonio de Souza.
