Located on the bank of river Fornelo, it is a small typical village that seems to have been reborn from its ashes. During the French invasions, the Gaul troops set fire to Ovelhinha while retreating from Amarante, and the village still features the ruins of some of the houses that were destroyed by the fire at that occasion.
Otherwise, this is a small traditional village with granite houses and a few manor houses such as the Vila Seca House, the Ribeira House and the Ovelhinha House, which dates back to the 17th century. The Chapel of Saint Amaro is a place of pilgrimage during the festivities in honour of the saint with that same name.
Entertainment is guaranteed throughout the year thanks to the Cavalinho [little horse] Fair that, each month, attracts hundreds of visitors and sells almost a bit of everything, from farming tools to cattle, horses, donkeys and other farm animals, clothes, shoes and sweets. This is were the Ovelhina bread was born; it is a four-cornered bread, also known as Padronelo bread. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to taste it.
