In the 2026–2027 academic year, the Route of the Romanesque is launching the eighth edition of its school competition, on the theme ‘The Romanesque and the Founding of the Portuguese Nation’.
The competition is aimed at the school community, from pre-school to secondary level (both state and private schools), across the 86 municipalities of the Northern Region of Portugal.
Entries submitted to this School Competition should creatively explore the relationship between the Romanesque style and the process of the formation of Portuguese nationality, highlighting its development in the context of the kingdom’s territorial expansion between the 11th and 14th centuries.
Particular value will be placed on entries that, in some way, highlight the thematic link between the foundation of Portugal and the monuments that currently make up the Romanesque Route.
The competition will award prizes to the three best entries in each of the following three categories, by educational level:
a) Visual arts: Pre-school and the 1st Cycle of Basic Education;
b) Creative writing: the 2nd and 3rd Cycles of Basic Education;
c) Open category: Secondary Education.
The deadline for submitting entries is 20 May 2027, via this form.
See the competition rules.
