Opened on 8 August 2025, Lugar Saudade – Teixeira de Pascoaes, located in the former Amarante prison, aims to promote and enhance the legacy of this key figure in 20th-century Portuguese culture.
The space brings together a representative collection of objects, documents, photographs, works of art and furniture belonging to Teixeira de Pascoaes, allowing visitors to gain an insight into the author's private life, thoughts and creative universe.
Teixeira de Pascoaes was born in Amarante in 1877. He studied law in Coimbra, but soon exchanged jurisprudence for literature and rural life, settling at Casa de Pascoaes in Gatão.
A central figure of Saudade and the Portuguese Renaissance, he stood out in Porto and Lisbon as a poet, philosopher and essayist. His writing, marked by a strong telluric and introspective imagination, consolidated him as the poet-philosopher of saudade.
The author of a vast body of work translated into several languages, he remained faithful to poetry until the end of his life in 1952.
He is buried in the parish cemetery of Gatão, next to the Church of Saint John the Baptist, a National Monument of the Route of the Romanesque.
