Elsa Carvalho - Rota do Românico

Mrs Elsa has been responsible for opening and cleaning Freixo de Baixo Monastery since the early 2010s.
Ever since she was a little girl, she has had a strong connection to this building. She recalls that 'when I was younger, there was no one to look after the church, there was an aunt of mine who went to the houses of the richest people to ask for flowers at weekends (...), she would bring camellias (...), put them in a vase to decorate the altars.'
She remembers a time when the church had no pews and people had to attend the celebrations standing. She was always responsible for sweeping the church before the Eucharist services.
Freixo de Baixo Monastery is very important to Mrs. Elsa, who recognises that it has always been a monument that attracted many visitors, even before joining the Route of the Romanesque.
